Know Your Enemy

The sea holds many terrors, and two of them are going to meet on Climate Pledge ice this Thursday evening. And while your Seattle Kraken have struggled to find both goals and wins in the early days of the 2023-24 season, the Carolina Hurricanes have had no such difficulty. The same evening the Kraken fell to the Colorado Avalanche, the ‘Canes beat up on the San Jose Sharks to the tune of 6-3, outshooting them by nearly 30 shots.

The names aren’t all well known across the league, but this is a very good hockey team. Defenceman Brady Skjei leads them in points (1G, 5A) but he is only one of ten players with 3 or more points in the team’s first 4 games. Goaltender Freddy Andersen is day-to-day with an upper body injury, so we should expect to see backup Antti Raanta between the pipes.

With players like the ageless Brent Burns on the back end and four lines of forwards who can score up front, we should expect a high scoring affair. The Kraken’s saving grace is that the Hurricanes don’t seem quite so tight defensively this season. While they’re scoring 4.75 goals per game, they’re allowing 4.25 as well. Seattle has had real difficulty scoring in any situation, be it powerplay, even strength or with an empty net but hopefully that changes tonight. If not, an 0-5 start may be in the cards.
