Firebirds vs. Wranglers Game 1 RECAP: Calgary pulls away late to win 4-1

The bigger goal is splitting the series, but they gotta split it on Sunday afternoon.

Highlights, if you want them!

Game Notes

  • The AHL doesn’t list any times on ice, so you won’t be getting any of that.
  • This was predictably as tight a game as you could imagine, in spite of the final score; the defining aspect was goaltending and defense…just not in the way you might expect. Both teams were EXTREMELY sloppy all night, and giving up chances with aplomb. The dam only broke in the third period, when the Wranglers found an attacking rhythm that split the Firebirds defense open.
  • The Firebirds NEED to keep Adam Klapka on a tight leash for the rest of the series. He was all over the ice for Calgary and tore Coachella Valley a new one.
  • Very interesting night for Ryker Evans, who had the sole goal of the night…and also half of Coachella’s penalties on the night. For the same thing. Nearly back-to-back. What got into you tonight, Garth?
  • Chris Driedger was pretty good, but Dustin Wolf is as advertised; finishing the night with a .972 SV% on 36 shots and a good portion of them were right in front of him. The Firebirds are gonna need a real good push to even this one up. Especially when it comes to defending their goaltender.

Game 2 in Calgary is on Sunday, and it’s an afternoon game. It starts at 3pm PT.

We’ll see you there. Let’s even this up, boys!
