Kraken vs. Wild RECAP: Seattle tamed in 5-2 loss

Game Notes

  • The first period the officiating was not kind to Seattle. Jared McCann took a high hit that wasn’t called, then a couple of pretty soft calls on Seattle gave Minnesota a 5-on-3, which let them score. Adam Larsson was called for elbowing at the end of the third, which gave the Wild a goal to start the second. At that point, it was 3-1.
  • Joey Daccord gave up 4 goals on 11 shots and was pulled early in the second for Philipp Grubauer. This was Daccord’s first time being pulled this season, and also the first time this year Philipp Grubauer has come in relief.
  • Seattle came on strong towards the end of the second but they weren’t able to solve Marc-Andre Fleury. Lots and lots of shot pressure.
  • The crowd broke into the loudest “REFS YOU SUCK!” chant of the season I’m pretty sure. The players and fans were frustrated with how the refs controlled this game. Even when the game was played at even-strength, we had a couple of 4-on-4 stretches. The officials called a ludicrous 16 penalties and less than 40 minutes of the game were played 5-on-5. It was just a weird, disjointed game.

Let’s Give a Hand To…

  • Dave Hakstol! Not every game is going to be great, but one thing the Kraken were not lacking was effort. Hakstol didn’t think it was good enough and I love his mindset of taking away from the game that will make you better, then looking forward. One of the hallmarks of Hakstol’s Kraken tenure is that problems tend to get solved over the course of the season, and it has a lot to do with the way he coaches.
  • Vince Dunn! For an absolute blast to start the scoring 36 seconds in, but he was one of the best players on the ice and a madman.
  • Philipp Grubauer! Grubauer came in relief for Joey Daccord and gave up only one goal on 14 shots for a .944 save percentage. Like last season, Grubauer’s been really terrific after returning from injury.
  • The Winter Classic jerseys! They might not look quite as sweet as they did on New Year’s Day when they shut out Vegas, but they’re still absolutely gorgeous and I’m happy we’re getting to see them more than one game this season.
  • DJ Trunks! The regular Kraken in-house DJ had been missing since before the Winter Classic, but made his triumphant return tonight. Welcome back — it wasn’t the same without you.
