Game Notes

It was pride night at Climate Pledge arena, reminding us all that hockey is for everyone! And everyone got to enjoy this nail biter. Tonight’s game was a drama that played out in three acts, a slow burn that started with a measured, scoreless first period, a quicker and more aggressive second period that included a goal from Jaden Schwartz, and a third period that proved to be the breathless high note.

Penalties and power plays became the story of the game. Ten seconds into the first period, Andre Burakovsky gets a tripping penalty which seemed like foreshadowing, but as the game ramped up and the Ducks got angrier, they kept raking in those minutes. After fights, roughing, and cross checking galore, they managed 19 penalty minutes in the third period alone.

During this season, when the Kraken play the Ducks, the Kraken are 52.9% on the power play, the second most of any two team matchups in the league. Tonight, the Kraken managed 3 power play goals out of a possible 10.

Two minutes into the third and a dirty hit on Tye Kartye later, William Lagesson of the Ducks got 2 minutes for roughing. Then came a series of unfortunate events: about 10 seconds into the power play, Anaheim’s Isac Lundestrom got a short-handed goal to tie the game. Less than a minute later, during the same power play, Anaheim’s Jakob Silfverberg got another unassisted shorty and the Ducks took the lead 2-1.

While this could have wrecked all momentum, the Kraken roared back as the Ducks showed more frustration. Trevor Zegras seemed up to no good and his antagonizing eventually got him 4 minutes for roughing and cross-checking Brandon Tanev. While in the sin bin, he was seen destroying Root Sport’s penalty box camera, rounding out his night’s awful behavior. He didn’t appear to play after that and time will tell if he’ll have to answer for the property damage.

Despite all the animosity between the teams, Dave Haksdol downplayed the aggression.

“Tonight wasn’t real nasty. It was competitive but it wasn’t a real nasty hockey game,” Hak said after the game.

He also emphasized the importance of bouncing back after something as disappointing as two short-handed goals in the same power play.

“Well I guess that’s how you answer and our power play answered. Obviously, to give up the sloppy goals back to back that we did could be catastrophic in a game. Fortunately for us, we had another opportunity coming and those guys were able to capitalize and get one back,” Haksdol said and pointed out that Tanev, Yanni Gourde, and Tye Kartye were instrumental in helping the team bounce back.

Ultimately, the Kraken answered back with goals from André Burakovsky, Tye Kartye, and Matty Beniers to end the game with a 4-2 win and back-to-back victories against the Ducks.

Congratulations

Jordan Eberle is having a heck of a month. After celebrating 1,000 games in the NHL, tonight he celebrates 400 career assists. He’s also one point away from 700 total career points.
