Jaycob Megna waived, claimed by Blackhawks

Kraken defenseman Jaycob Megna was placed on waivers yesterday with the intent of sending him back down to Coachella Valley. Megna, who just couldn’t find himself in the lineup this season, was the odd man out as the last defenseman on the roster. He’s played 0 NHL games this season and 2 games with Coachella Valley.

Still, he was a sound defenseman last year for the Sharks and he’s cheap, so it’s no surprise that some team would claim an NHL-caliber defenseman on a team-friendly contract, and he indeed was claimed by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Waivers are a good way for a player to get playing time when he would otherwise not be with his former NHL club. Megna played 54 NHL games last season, 6 of which were with Seattle.

With Ryker Evans sent back to Coachella Valley, this move leaves only 6 defensemen on the Kraken roster (Will Borgen, Brian Dumoulin, Vince Dunn, Adam Larsson, Jamie Oleksiak, Justin Schultz). It’s unlikely they’ll carry only 6 defensemen for the rest of the season, so keep an eye on what the Kraken do to address that.
