Game Preview
In true Pacific Northwest November fashion, it’s a rainy day in Vancouver.
In the hallowed halls of Pacific Stadium, the Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Goldeneyes will take the ice for the first time in a game that counts for real points in the PWHL standings. They will meet four times throughout this season, all in pursuit of the Walter Cup.
In so doing, they will be writing a new history for women’s hockey.
We do this a lot in women’s sports, talk about how exciting new teams write history, but in this case, it will be true. Because it will be proof not just that the PWHL can survive, it can truly thrive from coast to coast. It helps that both sides are absolutely stacked to the gills with talent. Finishing your first broadcast day with Hilary Knight vs. Sarah Nurse is a luxury few leagues can afford, and thankfully the PWHL isn’t going to let that go to waste.
If ever there was a tough matchup to start live fire against, you’d be hard pressed to come up with a better team right now to do it with than the Goldeneyes; who feature a very deep forward corps, a stout and sensible blueline headlined by Sydney Bard, Sophie Jacques, and Ashton Bell, and Emerance Maschmeyer heading up the goaltending. If you wanted to see what the best of women’s hockey looks like that didn’t involve an olympic medal or the french language, this is probably it.
Thankfully, the Torrent have some of the most shift-warping talent to play in the modern era. Alex Carpenter, Hannah Bilka, rookie Jenna Buglioni, and of course, Knighter herself. Knowing that at any time they can turn up ice and make even a really good team go bug-eyed for a second is going to be a powerful tool in the Torrent’s arsenal this year, and it will mean the difference between merely the start of something greater, or the declaration of intent to succeed immediately.
So it’s high time the Torrent showed the world who they really are, and it starts by stuffing these Goldeneyes.
LET’S GO TORRENT!
