Kraken re-sign Morgan Geekie, sign free agent Michal Kempný

The Kraken made a couple additions to their roster on Sunday afternoon. The team first announced they had agreed to terms with pending RFA Morgan Geekie on a one-year, $1.4 million contract, two weeks before their scheduled arbitration hearing.

Geekie tallied 7 goals and 15 assists in his first season with the club and averaged a little over 12 minutes of ice time per game. He notched his first in the Kraken’s very first game in Vegas on October 12th, tying the game at 3 midway through the third period.

Later in the day, reports surfaced that the team had also reached an agreement with free agent defender Michal Kempný.

Kempný is the second former Capitals defender to join the Kraken this offseason, along with Justin Schultz. The 31-year old has dealt with injuries in recent years, appearing in only 15 games last season. But when healthy, he has in the past been a solid middle-pair defender. There’s no guarantee he can get back to the level he played at earlier in his career, but with a one-year, $750k contract, the risk for Seattle is essentially zero. He and Will Borgen will likely begin as the rotational 6th defenders for Seattle once the year begins.
