Kraken take down Avs with 3-2 win

The Seattle Kraken needed a whole host of things to go right to beat arguably the best team in the NHL this season, the Colorado Avalanche. Fortunately most of those did go right for them on Wednesday night: the goaltending was good, the goal scoring was good, and a lucky bounce helped seal the deal.

Nearly all the scoring (and literally all the scoring from the good guys) came in the very first period. The early goal, often a thorn in the side of the Kraken this season, made an appearance again on Wednesday, but this time in a much more pleasant fashion. Kole Lind notched the second goal of his young career with a soft little deke after a great set up from Will Borgen.

This was just a perfectly executed set play from the third line here. Borgen intentionally fires it off the end boards, knowing Lind is already on his horse ready to beat out the icing call. From there it’s just a little forehand-backhand move from Lind and the Kraken get on the board first.

Seattle kept their foot down on the gas after that one, a smart play considering it’s virtually impossible to shut out the Avalanche. Just four minutes after Lind’s opening goal, Seattle extended their lead thanks to a wicked shot from All-Star Jordan Eberle.

Matty Beniers and Ryan Donato did work prior to this to dig the puck out from the corner. Eberle was patient with the puck when it came to him, realized he had a little time and space to get a good shot off, and executed a tough shot to perfection.

Once again, we have to note that a two goal lead against the Colorado Avalanche is anything but safe. So how about a three goal lead.

This is where that little bit of luck came into play. Adam Larsson do a great job catching Nathan MacKinnon going off for a line change, and use that opportunity to easily gain the offensive zone. From there, Yanni Gourde goes hard to the net, and Jared McCann does the thing that’s never a bad idea in a hockey game: throw the puck at the net. A little pinballing later and the Kraken are up 3-0.

The Avs stopped the bleeding a few short minutes later thanks to Cale Makar, who really is That Dude. An eventful first period came to a close with Seattle leading 3-1, a score that held for another 39 minutes of game clock. That’s when, late in the third period, Artturi Lehkonen got Colorado within one thanks to a rebound out front and the stick of Valeri Nichushkin interfering with Philipp Grubauer in the crease which in my mind should disallow the goal BUT I DIGRESS. The goal stood, and in the end it didn’t matter. Seattle takes home the 3-2 victory.

Final Thoughts

Seattle next hits the ice on Friday in Minnesota at 5pm PDT against the Wild, looking to extend that season-long winning streak to four games.
