Tye Kartye had a most unusual introduction to the NHL. His first 10 games were playoff games in 2023. His debut was Game 5 of the series against Colorado, and Kartye scored the go-ahead goal. “A year ago, a year and a half ago this was my wildest dream,” Kartye said at the time. “This day has been pretty special.”
Kartye was only in the lineup because Jared McCann had been injured in the previous game. “My parents drove from my hometown to Toronto when I told them I was playing,” Kartye said. “(They took) the first plane to Denver to get here. I think they missed the first two minutes and then they were watching the whole game.”
Undrafted, one year earlier Kartye was scratching out a spot on the 4th line at the Kraken’s AHL farm team in Coachella Valley. By the end of an improbable season, Kartye had scored 28 goals and was named the league’s rookie of the year.
This summer, the club re-signed Kartye to a two-year, $2.5 million contract. His 175 hits ranked fourth among all NHL skaters who appeared in 63 games or less last season.
