Jordan Eberle skated onto the ice for the 2024-25 season with a Seattle Kraken jersey slightly different than any of his teammates. Above and to the right of the Kraken “S” logo, the 15-year, 1,060-game NHL veteran had a “C” affixed to his sweater. Eberle had been named the second captain in the history of the Kraken, and the first since Mark Giordano was traded late in the team’s expansion season.
“As far as accountability, we have a pretty good leadership crew in this locker room. Our guys have played a lot of games, guys who have won Cups, guys who’ve been around for a while. They know what it takes to win. They know how you have to play to win. It’s just a matter of doing on a night-to-night basis.
“The kids come now, they’re so professional. The game has changed in the fact that you’re playing every second day. The game is so fast and physical, you have to be prepared, you have to be dialed in each night. You can’t go out the night before and have any fun. Even when I was younger, that wasn’t really a thing. If you had a couple of nights (off), possibly.”
His captaincy was complicated by a rare pelvic injury in a November game against Chicago that limited the winger to 42 games. Surgery was followed by months of grueling rehab. “It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve gone through,” Eberle told NHL.com. “The hardest part for me was this is an injury that I couldn’t find evidence of another hockey player having. So, to have to go through surgery, I was obviously in the mindset of, ‘am I going to be able to actually come back and play hockey again?’ Those thoughts cross your mind.”
Though he missed 40 games, the captain’s determination allowed him to make a surprisingly quick return for a late February game against the Florida Panthers. The injury and the captaincy were just part of an eventful last two years for Eberle. In March, 2024, he signed a two-year, $9.5 million contract extension. The same month, he played his 1,000th NHL game.
Eberle is an original Kraken, selected in the 2021 expansion draft. He scored the first hat trick in franchise history, was their first All Star representative, and in 2023 scored an unforgettable overtime goal at home against Colorado in Game 4 of the Kraken’s first ever playoff series.
The captain isn’t anti-social, just anti-social media. “It’s been a long time since I had social media. I’m happy without it. I’d gone through some tough times in Edmonton. I don’t care how mentally strong you are; you read comments after games. I decided to get rid of it. The only negative part of it is, if something happens in the world, I’m not up to date.”
During his days with the Islanders, Eberle and two teammates penned a team fight song during a road trip. “In Long Island, me, Matt Barzal and Anders Lee used to take our guitars on the road. We wrote some songs. I enjoy playing. It works different muscles in your brain. My kids sing along with me. I’m a terrible singer, but I don’t think you can play (guitar) without singing.”
Among the under-appreciated reasons for the Seattle Mariners’ 2025 surge was Eberle throwing out the first pitch before the M’s waxed the Anaheim Angels, 11-2 at T-Mobile Park on Sept. 14, 2025.
“It’s a little bit nerve-racking,” he admitted at the time. “You’re out of your comfort zone a little bit. but for me to do that stuff, now that I’ve got a family, they’re able to come watch. It’s kind of neat for them. Plus, the Mariners are rolling right now. It’s fun to watch. I think the city’s got a lot of hype right now.”
