Jared McCann, number 19 in your program, number one in Seattle Kraken scoring for each of the franchise’s first four seasons. That’s right, McCann’s point totals – 50, 70, 62, and 61 last season, place him atop the Kraken annual – and all-time – scoring lists. McCann also courageously played all 82 games in 2024-25, despite nagging injuries which necessitated summer surgery.
So it was humorous to read all off-season to how many different destinations McCann was headed – at least in the fertile imagination of click-hungry online sites.
Those writers apparently didn’t realize McCann had been off the market since July, 2024, when he married the former Valerie Vanderkuylen (Instagram wedding photo at left.)
McCann’s high-water mark with Seattle came in the 2022-23 playoff season, when the winger broke out with 40 goals. He told NHL.com, “I’m pretty hard on myself most of the time. No matter what I’ve done, I always feel like there’s room for more. Like I could be doing it better.”
His playoffs weren’t as happy, due to a late, cheap hit to his head after the whistle by Colorado defenseman Cale Makar. McCann missed six games.
McCann was traded from Pittsburgh to Toronto just before the 2021 expansion draft, then left unprotected by the Maple Leafs. THN’s Carol Schram in 2024 had a wonderful way of examining just how good the selection of McCann was. “The only Penguins with more points over the last three years are Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin. The only Maple Leafs are (Auston) Matthews, (Mitch) Marner, (Michael) Nylander and (John) Tavares. On top of that, with McCann off Pittsburgh’s list, the Kraken selected Brandon Tanev.”
When McCann signed a five year, $25 million extension in 2022, he said, “I believe in this city and I believe in this organization. We’re obviously looking forward to the future here and what we can accomplish as a team.”
Now one of Seattle’s elder statesmen, Eberle has embraced a mentor’s role while still putting up a career-high 39 assists last season. “Didn’t score as much as in past years, but I felt like I was creating a lot more. I had the opportunity to play with a lot of young players trying to learn and get better, and I tried to be a leader for them and a good teammate. I tried to calm them down and help them out as much as I could.
“You can go through stretches when you’re playing well and things are going in,” he said, “but there will be long stretches when it’s the opposite. When things are going that way, I try to switch my mentality to help the team win. As a teammate, when you see somebody blocking shots or doing something different when it’s not going their way, that’s a guy you want.”
