Report: Kraken to sign goaltender Martin Jones

The Kraken’s first reported signing of the 2022 free agency season is…a goalie. St. Louis Blues reporter Andy Strickland is reporting that Seattle will be signing long-time San Jose Sharks goaltender Martin Jones.

Elliott Friedman also reported hearing that Seattle is interested in Jones.

Chris Driedger is expected to miss the majority of the season — he tore his ACL at the end of May and the Kraken reported that his recovery will take 7-9 months, putting him back in game action somewhere between January and March of 2023. Charlotte Checkers standout Joey Daccord is the only other goalie under contract right now in Seattle. He’ll have some competition now in Jones for the backup spot to Philipp Grubauer heading into the 2022-23 season.

Jones posted a .900 save percentage with the Philadelphia Flyers last season, the first time he reached at least .900 since his 2017-18 season in San Jose. He played well his first few seasons in the league, but has been relegated to a backup role recently, and rightfully so.

Hopefully new goaltending coach Steve Briere can get him back nearer his peak performance this season, should the Kraken in fact sign him. We’ll update further once we hear more.
