…It’s all about how ya finish.
But First, the Highlights!
Game Notes
- Your TOI Leader was Adam Larsson, who played 24:03 tonight.
- This game was whacky. From the opening minutes of having a too many men penalty, only two shots on goal and one of them going in, Joey Daccord having to stand on his brain-case through 40 minutes, and then almost immediately Pittsburgh deciding in no uncertain terms that they would be losing this game and losing it as fast as it could feasibly could be on a defensive effort so porous and gruesome you’d think the Pens had all their controllers disconnected.
- But for real, this was actually a much better effort in Puck security for Seattle, even if they didn’t exactly have the puck much in the second period. They kept the Penguins guessing with their shots, they stayed active, they used good body control to avoid giving up the puck on the walls…can’t ask for much more than that!
- The power play was 0-for-1 on both sides. The Penalty Kill on the other hand, got an absolutely phenominal tally out of their time out there, and so I can say tonight’s special teams were a rousing success!
- Joey had a busy schedule of shots to save tonight, and I think it’s only right that the team chip in and get him whatever he wants at Sheetz or that place that serves fries in the sandwiches. Even the desserts. He had a .939 SV% on 33 shots!
- Apparently Evgeni Malkin is having the worst day ever in spite of his return to the lineup; he had his house broken into and all his Stanley Cup rings stolen. That’s just evil, man. I hope they catch the jackwagon who pulled this stunt.
- If there was an ambiance thing that stuck out to tonight’s bizarre little contest, it’s that the building in Pittsburgh was empty. Maybe it’s just the old gold seats making it obvious when people aren’t in the seats and what not. but man they really don’t believe in this version of the Pens at all, do they? Or was a 7pm Eastern start too much for them?
Let’s Give A Hand To…
- Kaapo Kakko! Might’ve gotten in trouble for saying “Perkele” to the refs, but he finished things off with an empty netter, and has 5 points in his last 5 games. It’s still very early, but y’know…that fella might be something.
- Jamie Oleksiak! For finding apparently the exact route necessary to cause the Pittsburgh Penguins to just…not do anything while he went to the net. Still! An all-important tying goal setting up Eeli Tolvanen!
- I’m gonna give a hand to Josh Mahura, Shane Wright, and Eeli Tolvanen for the absolutely incredible shift that got the team up 3-2. Mahura fought off the backcheck, Wright made a heads-up play pulling the puck off the wall and put an incredible pass on Tolvanen’s stick. All of that in less of a minute. What. A. Shift. Well done, boys.
- Adam Larsson! For a strong two-assist night!
- Chandler Stephenson! For getting this nonsense started with a short-handed goal! Great hustle by him!
- Joey Daccord! First NHL point, 31 saves on 33 shots and a big part of keeping them in this game! Well done indeed.
