The Seattle Kraken in the summer of 2024 signed a free agent defenseman from the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. No, wait, they signed two. Brandon Montour was the high-profile pickup. But Josh Mahura played valuable minutes on the Kraken blueline last season as well.

No wonder Montour advocated for Mahura – they were teammates previously on both the Ducks and Panthers, and won a Stanley Cup together in Sunrise in 2024. While with Florida, Mahura received this review from Panthers coach Paul Maurice. “He is a good puck mover, he is a good skater, he can close the gap.”

Mahura provided reliable defense for Seattle in 2024-25, averaging 13:45 TOI and finishing +5 in 62 games. Especially after Will Borgen was traded in December, the acquisition of the former Duck and Panther proved essential. Also in Mahura’s favor is that he can slot in at both right and left defense. The Kraken rewarded him this past off-season with a new two-year contract.

In all three of his pro stops, Mahura has alternated between regular and spot duty. It’s a role he accepts with a characteristically good attitude. “I think it’s just the mindset of, wherever I am in the lineup, I’m ready to go,” Mahura said. “I’ve one a great job with coaches and trainers in the gym to prepare me for that, so I’m just staying positive every day.”
