Seattle Kraken prospect Jani Nyman, only 20 years old, is already making a name for himself at AHL Coachella Valley. That includes being named as Firebirds representative to the 2025 AHL All-Star game, held earlier this month in front of his home fans at Acrisure Arena. Nyman (pronounced “Newman”) was selected by Seattle in the 2nd round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

This Last Story Is Really Cool(ly)

Devin Cooley, a goalie in the Calgary Flames system, has absolutely no connection to the Seattle Kraken or the state of Washington, save for one season playing for the Wenatchee Wild.
But Jenn took some marvelous photos of Cooley entertaining fans during the skills competition – seen at left – and I don’t know when else I’d ever have an opportunity to share this amazing Devin Cooley story.

The goalie, who signed with the Flames as a free agent last summer, told Sportsnet about a too-eventful drive from San Jose to Calgary for training camp.
“A pickup truck three cars ahead of us swerved into a ditch, swerved back over three lanes of traffic and smashed head-on with a semi-truck. Massive explosion, the guy in the truck goes flying out of the windshield, the pickup truck catches fire and starts a massive wildfire.
“The semi was filled with whipped cream canisters, so they started popping like popcorn. We go through Banff, and then at 1:30 in the morning, an hour from Calgary, we hit a pothole in the middle of the night and both tires, ‘boom.’”
After that adventure, stopping 90 mph slapshots must not seem so dangerous.
