Each of Joey Daccord’s new Seattle Kraken goalie masks is hiding an Easter egg. Not literally – that could get quite messy. We’re talking about the kind of Easter egg strategically tucked within films and video games.
Daccord played college hockey at Arizona State, whose nickname is “Sun Devils” and whose mascot is this guy at left, known as “Sparky.” Well, when Daccord’s masks are tilted at just the right angle, Sparky’s visage materializes out of nowhere.
In the case of the netminder’s 2024-25 masks (home, above left image; road, above right), the mischief was perpetrated by a Bakersfield, CA mask designer known as “Shifty.” You can view more angles of Daccord’s masks at Shifty’s Instagram page.
We’ve circled the devilish mascot with the toothy grin so you can find him in the two mask closeups at right.
Speaking of mascots, the Kraken’s Buoy is featured below the left ear hole on Daccord’s home lid. Designer Shifty wrote on X, “@SEAbuoy asked when we were going to put him on a mask. So the Mayor and I had a discussion and agreed he was worthy. Enjoy, Buoy this one’s for you!”
Shifty wrote about the new road mask, which is meant to accessorize the team’s away jersey, “Simple and bold to go with the white unis. Looks subtle from a distance but under that matte clear it’s packed with tons of sparkles. Is it hockey season yet?!”
As for the goalie himself, Daccord summed up his approval of the new designs by replying to Shifty with two “Fire” emojis.
