Kraken to release new mascot on October 1st

The Kraken’s preseason opened with quite the bang — and it wasn’t just because they shut out their Pacific division foes in Edmonton. They also dropped a big piece of off-ice news:

The Kraken will unveil their new mascot on Saturday, October 1st!

Mark your calendars, mascot-heads. This leaves us with just four short days of wild speculation.

First off, let’s take a minute to appreciate Seattle legend and Parks and Rec star Detlef Schrempf. He makes an appearance in the teaser video linked above, pitching the idea that the Kraken should bring back Squatch, the old Sonics mascot. The kids quickly dismiss this, citing the fact that the Sonics will in fact be returning, which on the one hand is clearly some solid fan service but on the other hand WHAT DO YOU KNOW TIM LEIWEKE?!

Anyway, it’s safe to say the new Seattle Kraken mascot will have a deep sea theme. The Kraken celebrate their victories by handing out a Davy Jones hat from part-owner Jerry Bruckheimer’s Pirates of the Caribbean — could they add another link to the franchise via the mascot? Or will they attempt to make a giant squid put on ice skates? We’ll find out for sure this Saturday.
