Game 26 RECAP: Grubauer has decent game! Offense splutters. Kraken lose 4-1

It was close, until a match penalty gave DC what they needed to overcome the Deep.

The Kraken are finding fun new ways to drive us crazy these days...

But first, the Highlights:

Game Notes:

  • TOI leader for the Kraken was Vince Dunn, who got 26:09 tonight.
  • The most heartbreaking thing about this game is that Philipp Grubauer; who deservedly has a bit of a rough reputation, pitched a fantastic effort where the Seattle offense completely stopped working for most of two periods and finished his night with a .944 SV% and kept this team within one for pretty much all of it. For as frustrating a game they played, Grubert did his job today.
  • That said...Washington mostly ran the show; completely dominated the Kraken at most strengths, and part of the issue was Seattle’s overreliance on passing that didn’t end in any shots, leading to the Caps doing mostly whatever they wanted. They turned it up a little in the third, but ultimately chose to take the Hakstol Special to finish things out: do impotent flailing with the goalie pulled and give up more goals than necessary to lose anyway. Completely unacceptable effort, even if the Caps are on a heater right now. Vince Dunn, Justin Schultz and Adam Larsson shouldn’t count for almost 35% of your shots in a given night.
  • Jamie Oleksiak got a match penalty for a horrifically timed, chosen, and thrown hit on Alex Alexeyev, which was unfortunately the backbreaker for Seattle. We’ll see if he gets any further discipline, but frankly I hope he gets a game just to clear his head because that was a truly boneheaded play.
  • The Pacific is so funny: we should probably be deeply concerned for the Kraken’s playoff spot but everybody keeps insisting that they stay right where they are. If they start winning again they’ll just be setting it in stone. Gotta get some good efforts against the Florida teams to get that working.
  • Keep calm, and post Zoidberg when we win.

Let’s take a look at the graphs from NaturalStatTrick:

Again, knowing that this is what was happening in front of Grubauer, it’s a shame the boys couldn’t muster a point

The Kraken get Saturday off for travel, then take on the Florida Panthers on Sunday afternoon; that game drops the puck at 3pm PT

Let’s end this losing streak at three, please?
