Dennis Cholowski claimed by Washington Capitals

Defenseman Dennis Cholowski has been claimed off waivers by the Washington Capitals.

Seattle placed the 23-year old on waivers yesterday with the hope he’d be able to clear and join the Charlotte Checkers, but no dice. He’ll head to Washington where he will join fellow Seattle Kraken legend Vitek Vanecek.

Cholowski hasn’t had great results on the ice by most public analytics models. According to Micah Blake McCurdy of hockeyviz.com, teams allow about 13% more dangerous scoring chances for the opponent with Cholowski on the ice vs an average defender. In other words, all the red in the lower-left plot below is very bad news.

Cholowski did get some looks on the Kraken’s power play unit during the preseason, where he registered two assists with the man-advantage in two games. It wasn’t enough to take a spot from either of Mark Giordano or Vince Dunn, however. The third pair now appears to belong to some combination of Vince Dunn with Carson Soucy/Will Borgen/Jérémy Lauzon. We’re still waiting to find out which will get the nod tonight as the Kraken look for their first win when they take on the Nashville Predators on the road at 5pm PST tonight.
